Calabogie Peaks - February 7, 2016

Recommended Posts

Sunday was my second outing to this season to Calabogie and I was surprised how much impact last weeks rains had on the hill.  Ice may have formed on Calabogie lake but the snow coverage was significantly less on the mountain than my last visit Jan. 23rd.  This was evident as I took the Solar Quad up the hill and looked at sections of Barrett Chute and Face of Tiger.  Much of the accumulated snow on Barrett Chute had disappeared and there were exposed sections at the top of Face of Tiger. Morning conditions on runs such as High Falls, Shantyman, Causeway and Finnegans were good with groomed granular conditions.  By mid-afternoon many of these runs were icy with the occasional exposed rock.

The hill was a busy place on Sunday with a U12 race being held on Whistlin'Paddy and the Freestyle Skiing Ontario's Timber Tour holding an event on the Face of Tiger. The lodge was at times packed, but an outdoor BBQ and firepit created a good ambiance and gave skiers some options for places to sit and eat.

An all-day adult pass costs $42, which is discounted during the week. Skiers can also purchase a 4hr pass. The hill is open 9-4 daily.  Calabogie is located approximately 100km west of Ottawa, southwest of Arnprior, Ont. Conditions on Sunday were overcast.

Lots of great trails at Calabogie. Always visited when the Lakeview quad was not running, so never experienced Black Donalds and the view. Hopefully next time.

Face of Tiger is one hell of a drop. Good to get the blood pumping and the heart racing on the coldest days!
